” PEOPLE convicted of serious assault would be offered two years’ army service instead of a jail sentence under a radical plan ” in Australia.

Pic courtesy of Internet.
When at the military officer training camp a cadet was caught stealing money from co-servicemen, an idea to discharge him and make him serving a regular compulsory service term was sharply rejected by senior commanders because serving in a military force defending a country had been seen a honourable duty of responsible citizens, not a penalty.
Perhaps, round a globe existing, different approaches to a compulsory military service reflect differences in cultures, as a quantity of goods consumed is yet to indicate a degree of a moral and loyalty of the residing in even the countries of origin.
And a cadet thief was not qualified, sent to a jail.

This plan does no credit at all to Australian justice and the Australian military.
I served for years in the British Navy, so I am well-placed to say that career military personnel do not want to see violent and aggressive hotheads in their ranks. An army exists to combat aggression, and not give it room for expression.
The military needs people to react rationally and coolly in dangerous situations. Uncontrolled and undisciplined violence by a combattant constitutes a risk for that person’s comrades.
What a dumb idea.
